Inspired by Max’s blog, ‘Old Steam Ships’:
SS Columbia – The Ship That Proved Edison Right.
This week I have chosen not to focus on the tragedy
surrounding the Columbia. Rather, this is a fictional
dramatization in what might have been the voice of
Emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil when he saw the
electric lights installed on the Columbia.

Dear Diary
Written for Great Minds Think –
“What the Hedge Knows”. Our hosts,
Sarah & Rohini, ask us to use this image
as inspiration for our piece, keeping
our main focus on the hand.
Field Of Fog
Written for dVerse Poetics – Once in a
Lifetime. Our host, Kim, invites us to
write a poem beginning with “Once in a
lifetime”, making use of line breaks and
caesura, creating rhythm and emotion.
Kim’s inspiration for this challenge is
“The Window”, a poem by Mary Jean Chan.
SS Pacific: Guilty Conscience
Inspired by Max’s blog, ‘Old Steam Ships’ –
this is my fictionalized “confession” (and I
use that term loosely) made by an un-named
foreman from an unknown shipyard, written
days after the coroner’s inquest re the SS
Pacific, addressed to no one in particular,
which somehow makes this tragedy even
worse. See my notes on the coroner’s inquiry.
My Daughter’s Hair
Written for Melissa’s Fandango Flash Fiction
Challenge using the image below as inspiration.
Liquid Lunch
Our gracious host, Rochelle, is asking us to get
creative in 100 words or less using the photo
seen below. This is Friday Fictioneers.
Four Seconds: RMS Lusitania
Inspired by Max’s blog, ‘Old Steam Ships’ –
this is my dramatized first-person fiction
built around the documented history of
Kapitänleutnant Walther Schwieger,
commander of U-20 responsible for
the sinking of the RMS Lusitania.
Torn In Two: A Narrative Monologue
Inspired by Max’s blog, ‘Old Steam Ships’ –
this is my story based on facts about the sinking
of the SS Daniel J. Morrell on Nov. 29, 1966 in
Lake Huron from reports made by 26-year-old
watchman and lone survivor, Dennis Hale.
The Lifeboat – April 10, 1968
Inspired by a new blog called ‘Old Steam Ships’
by our friend, Max, this is a fictionalized account
in the voice of Tom Dartford, Quartermaster
of the New Zealand ferry, TEV Wahine.
