Written for Sadje’s weekly query:
What Do You See?

A green sign nailed to a simple pole,
white spokes, a wicker basket catching light ….
this is the bicycle before the tornado finds it,
before the sky goes the color of sepia.
Somewhere a woman in a black coat rides
her own bicycle through a flattened field,
skirts snapping like a flag in a gathering storm,
her shadow already longer than the road.
We all remember the story: the house lifts,
the color comes back louder than before,
and every ordinary thing …. a tree, an apple, a bicycle ….
turns into something to be afraid of.
So park it here instead, under palm fronds,
let the tires cool off by standing still,
let the sign do the only kind of magic
that doesn’t end in a twister: it just points, steady.

Rest assured, Dorothy is always on the lookout for those wicked witches. They hide, in disguise.

What a clever and creative segue from the prompt image, Nancy! Capturing that ominous moment of Miss Gulch riding her bicycle before everything turns to sepia and twisters is such a vivid image. Paired with Judy Garland’s timeless song, this was pure joy to read! 🌈🧹 Let me tell you one more thing, most of time these witches are hidden in someone you know closely. Many a time, some close well-wisher becomes the villain… so follow your dreams with your closed mouth…. Announce later when you are safe.

Thanks for your very kind and interesting comments. I never gave much thought to witches but I can see how your comment can be true.

Haha, glad it brought a fun new angle to the piece! 🧙♀️ Riding down the road on a bicycle in that setting just instantly brought Miss Gulch from Oz to mind. Always a pleasure reading and reflecting on your posts!

The first image brings to mind the song; ‘My White Bicycle’.

True. I wonder which one you were thinking of? There are several songs with the same name.

One of my favorites, too, Ange! My parents saw this movie and Judy Garland live on stage in 1939 before leaving for their honeymoon. It always brings warm memories. Thanks for your wonderful comments, my dear friend. 🥰

You’ve created a very evocative scenario by using this sign to make us aware of things that can happen if we fall victim to the evil magic. Thanks Nancy for joining in.

It may not seem like a natural segue but it was for me. The word “dream” always reminds me of this wonderful song and, in turn, I remember the movie. I took the idea and ran with it. Thanks for a wonderful comment and an inspiring image, sis. 😍
