Follow The Dream But Watch Out For Wicked Witches

 What Do You See?

A green sign nailed to a simple pole,
white spokes, a wicker basket catching light ….
this is the bicycle before the tornado finds it,
before the sky goes the color of sepia.

Somewhere a woman in a black coat rides
her own bicycle through a flattened field,
skirts snapping like a flag in a gathering storm,
her shadow already longer than the road.

We all remember the story: the house lifts,
the color comes back louder than before,
and every ordinary thing …. a tree, an apple, a bicycle ….
turns into something to be afraid of.

So park it here instead, under palm fronds,
let the tires cool off by standing still,
let the sign do the only kind of magic
that doesn’t end in a twister: it just points, steady.

  1. You’ve created a very evocative scenario by using this sign to make us aware of things that can happen if we fall victim to the evil magic. Thanks Nancy for joining in.
