Our gracious host, Rochelle, at Friday Fictioneers
asks us to use the photo below as inspiration
to write creatively in 100 words or less while
making every word count. This is my flash.

Fog clung to the bridge, swallowing up the towers. Detective Cal Harding shivered, the crisp air doing little to dispel the chill of the scene. A body lay sprawled on the pedestrian walkway.
Harding knelt, eyeing the victim’s designer suit and the ornate silver letter opener protruding from her neck. He scanned the fog-laden expanse. “Anyone else around?” he asked.
“Just the bridge, and the fog. We got nothing”, replied a police officer.
Harding stood, his gaze fixed on the bridge’s shrouded cables. “There’s always something.”
The fog, he realized, wasn’t just hiding the city; it was hiding a killer.

Really enjoyed the investigative, sleuthy “there’s always more” – because it makes for a competent investigator. And the ACDC song was so new to me – I had to look up when they made that video/wrote the song – and I guess it was 2000 – but if someone bet me on whether of not ACDC wrote a song called Safe in NYC, I would have lost the bet for sure.

Thanks for a great comment, Prior! I have to agree with you about the AC/DC video; I was very surprised when I saw it and immediately grabbed it for my story. A lucky break like that doesn’t happen every day!
I enjoy writing in the 1940s noir detective style; this photo prompt gave me just enough of a taste to write a little mystery. So pleased to know you enjoyed it. Thanks very much.

The killer is probably watching their every move, well concealed in the mist. Great atmosphere, very noir.

I imagined Caine from CSI (Miami) removing his sunglasses and squinting up at the cables before delivering the line, “There’s always something.” Intriguing murder mystery, Nancy. Nicely done!

Thanks, Lisa. I thought so, too, although at this time I don’t have any future stories in mind. Always good to have on the back burner.

I have a feeling the killer will get lost in the fog as well and make a circle back to the scene of the crime. An engaging read 🙂

One of the most perfect 100 word stories I’ve read. I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge last August so story resonated with me.

Are you a Brooklynite? It’s beautiful weather to be walking across the bridge!

You’re very welcome. It’s a joy to visit your blog. I am familiar enough with that band to have seen them a few times – years ago, and yet I am not familiar with that song. It’s fun to hear “new” ones. Thank you!
