There’s Always Something

Fog clung to the bridge, swallowing up the towers. Detective Cal Harding shivered, the crisp air doing little to dispel the chill of the scene. A body lay sprawled on the pedestrian walkway.

Harding knelt, eyeing the victim’s designer suit and the ornate silver letter opener protruding from her neck. He scanned the fog-laden expanse. “Anyone else around?” he asked.

“Just the bridge, and the fog. We got nothing”, replied a police officer.

Harding stood, his gaze fixed on the bridge’s shrouded cables. “There’s always something.”

The fog, he realized, wasn’t just hiding the city; it was hiding a killer.

  1. Really enjoyed the investigative, sleuthy “there’s always more” – because it makes for a competent investigator. And the ACDC song was so new to me – I had to look up when they made that video/wrote the song – and I guess it was 2000 – but if someone bet me on whether of not ACDC wrote a song called Safe in NYC, I would have lost the bet for sure.

    1. Thanks for a great comment, Prior! I have to agree with you about the AC/DC video; I was very surprised when I saw it and immediately grabbed it for my story. A lucky break like that doesn’t happen every day!

I enjoy writing in the 1940s noir detective style; this photo prompt gave me just enough of a taste to write a little mystery. So pleased to know you enjoyed it. Thanks very much.

  2. An intriguing photo to write to and you definitely make every word count, writer Nancy. Making room for dialogue, too! Engaging flash and your song selections are always fitting without being obvious. 👏🏻⚡

      1. You’re very welcome. It’s a joy to visit your blog. I am familiar enough with that band to have seen them a few times – years ago, and yet I am not familiar with that song. It’s fun to hear “new” ones. Thank you!
