Written for Great Minds Think – “Empty Spaces”.
Sarah asks us to write a poem or story which
explores the negative or positive idea of empty spaces.

The bowl is useful for its hollow,
the room for all the air it keeps,
the field lies dormant so that later
something green can rise from sleep.
A blank page isn’t missing notes;
it’s every song that’s yet to come.
The silence just before the music
is where the first chord gathers from.
An open door, an unlit window,
a pause that hasn’t found its say:
each one is not an absence,
but a welcome for the day.
So leave some corner of you open,
some quiet nothing’s harmed by none,
for empty is the shape of maybe,
and maybe is where all is begun.
