Nancy’s Notes: The top painting is The Veteran in a New Field, a renowned 1865 oil-on-canvas masterpiece by the prominent American realist painter Winslow Homer. It was completed in the immediate aftermath of the American Civil War, shortly after the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
