Written for dVerse Poets Haibun Monday –
‘Vision’. Our host, Frank, invites us to
write a haibun that alludes to vision.

My Grandma Rose …. my step-grandmother, actually …. lost the last of her sight the autumn she turned eighty-one, and still she insisted on planting. She knelt at the edge of the flower bed with a trowel in one hand and the other laid flat on the soil, reading it the way she used to read her bible …. slowly, lips moving. Too wet here …. the old lilac’s roots there. She knew each bulb by its texture, and set every one point-up without once asking me which end was which. When I asked what colors they’d be, she said she’d already seen them.
It took me years to understand she wasn’t being wistful. She was describing the only kind of vision that ever planted anything.
October morning ….
she buries a whole April
