Written for dVerse Poetics Tuesday –
To Ma’am/Sir. Our host, Punam, asks
us to write a poem about our teachers.

Hands resting on the keys, two worlds apart ….
the piano’s felt and wire, the organ’s heart
of wooden pipes and pedals at my feet ….
where rhythm, breath, and obligation meet.
I claimed the hours slipped away like sand,
no time to practice, none at my command.
My teacher paused, then met my quiet gaze,
and anchored truth into those fleeting days:
“You have all there is,” his simple words ….
the sharpest, quietest lesson ever heard.
No clever shelter left where I could hide,
just piano keys and organ pipes inside.
From bench to bench, the answer grew quite clear:
we make the time we give to what’s held dear.
The music does not wait for spare time found;
we choose the silence, or we choose the sound.

I gave up on piano lessons because my teacher used to hit my fingers with the sharp edge of a ruler every time I made a mistake. However, I found I could play by ear and somehow taught myself!

How awful! I had school teachers in my very early grades who loved whacking us with rulers or wooden spoons. We were so impressionable and will always remember those shameful, hurtful moments. To play an instrument by ear is a real gift and you’re lucky to possess it. I wish I did! Thank you, my friend.

We can always make time for what we want to do- and practice is not sometimes it.

Very true. We are quite skillful at making excuses and justifying our actions (or lack of)

I had some great lessons but I never had the energy to practice… maybe I could have really learned to play.

Spending time on what you care about shows that your actions match your feelings. Your saying we make the time we give to what’s held dear is like saying the love you make equals the love you take.

Precisely. And if you’ve save any of my emails, you’ll see that is the closing line for all of them. Thanks, Jim.

Yes, I know that you have adopted that line from The Beatles’ song The End.

This spoke to me, Nancy. Beautifully expressed. My daughter also plays the piano, so this resonated. ♥️

So nice to read your comments, Punam. I’ll never forget when my teacher said “You have all there is”. The hidden meaning in that message stayed with me all these years. Thank you very much. I hope your daughter enjoys the piano; the ability to make music is a great gift. 💕
