Written for Reena’s Xploration Challenge.
Reena has offered us a choice of quotes
with a twist to use as our inspiration. I
have selected: “We are all made of
stardust, trying to remember the sky”.

The morning sun of August 17, 1969, broke through the hillside of Max Yasgur’s farm like gold melting into mud. Amid the sea of half-a-million damp souls, Julian and Rainbow sat cross-legged on a plaid wool blanket that smelled of dampness and patchouli. They were deep in a kaleidoscopic trip, watching the air vibrate to the distant, distorted wails of Jimi Hendrix’s guitar.
Rainbow stared up at the rare patch of blue overhead. She blinked, her pupils wide as saucers, watching the clouds spin into geometric shapes. “Julian,” she whispered, her voice a breathless hum. “I get it now. We are all made of stardust, trying to remember the sky.“
Julian leaned in, his silver rings clinking. He looked at her …. really looked at her …. seeing the trails of light streaming from her eyes, the celestial threads anchoring her to the grass. “That’s beautiful, Rain,” he murmured, pulling her close. They promised, right there under the vibrations of the Bethel sky, that they would find each other in every lifetime. They were two cosmic sparks, momentarily grounded.
But then the trip waned, the crowd shifted, and another sudden downpour washed them into different currents. They lost each other before the festival even cleared.
Fifty-seven years later, the twist of their cosmic connection revealed itself. It wasn’t a metaphor.
Rainbow, now seventy-six, sat in a sleek, sterile room at the New England Astrobiology Institute. Beside her sat Julian. They hadn’t bumped into each other at a record store or a coffee shop; they had been summoned by a government sub-agency.
“We apologize for the secrecy,” a man half their age said, clicking to a slide display of two non-human DNA sequencing charts. “But the data from our deep-space receivers is undeniable.”
As it turned out, Julian and Rainbow weren’t just two hippies who took a potent batch of LSD in 1969. The acid they got from a stranger in a fringed vest wasn’t a drug at all. It was a microscopic, dormant extraterrestrial spore that had gotten attached to a meteorite, landing right in New York State. When ingested, the spores didn’t make them hallucinate; they made their human brains recall another living cell’s memory. They weren’t trying to remember the sky as a poetic whim; their physical matter was actually crying out for a galaxy millions of light-years away.
Julian looked across the metal table at Rainbow. Time had lined her face, and her hair was now a brilliant silver, but her eyes were the exact same pools he’d gotten lost in fifty-seven years ago. He smiled, a gentle chuckle escaping his chest. “Well, Rain,” Julian said, reaching across the table to take her wrinkled hand. “Looks like we finally remembered.”

Whoa, man… That was a whole ‘nother level of trippy!
Funny, when Marc and I visited the site, we had no idea such goings on were going on all those years ago 😉

Thanks, Dale! I usually managed to finagle my parents into letting me do whatever I wanted but, no matter how much I begged, they wouldn’t let me go to Woodstock, which was only a two hour drive. In hindsight, I’m grateful they stuck to their guns.

I’m thinking they made the correct decision. While it was all peace and love; it was filthy and gross – but oh, the music!

Without a doubt! I would have regretted it after 30 minutes! 😄

I really like this. It took me back to my rain-soaked mud-laden festival days – until it got closer to the end!
A perfect track, love it.

What? You mean you never ingested dormant extraterrestrial spores? Me either! 😂 Thanks so much!

I loved your fun story, Nancy except it had stopped raining before Hendrix got on stage.

Thanks much, Jim. Here I go playing the devil’s advocate! Take another look at my first paragraph; you’ll see I referenced the sun being out while Hendrix was playing. It started raining again after the effects of the LSD started wearing off.

I am not an expert on Woodstock and that does make sense that people can perceive that is it raining when the effects of LSD wear off. During the residual “afterglow” or comedown phase, some individuals report feeling highly attuned to nature, and they may be experiencing lingering visual distortions rather than actual weather.

Trippy!! Very cool, Nancy!
Years ago, I worked with a girl name Air. We always joked about her name being so….out there.

Air, eh? I think that may be even more out there than Apple …. maybe 🤷🏼♀️ 😂

Oh, what fantastic story, and of course, what a fantastic soundtrack my dear friend … I’m meeting up with my celestial star on Thursday for ‘our’ 50th anniversary … here’s a preview especially for you …
I See You Now, Fifty Years, Today
A day I celebrate every day —
every day, walking my narrow path,
I see you now.
Every day, looking into our misty mirror,
I see you now.
Fifty years, today —
every night, in my dreams,
I see you now.
Every night, in the stars.
I see you now.
I am here,
you are where you are.
One day, my dear,
I’ll join you in the stars.
