Be Careful Who You Trust

“El Condor Pasa (If I Could)”

For this week’s Thursday Inspiration, Jim Adams asks us to respond to the challenge in any number of ways, including using the prompt word ‘sound’, by means of the song ‘El Condor Pasa (If I Could)’’ by Simon & Garfunkel, or by any other way we see fit. My thoughts went immediately to the movie “3 Days of the Condor”, a 1975 American spy thriller directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Robert Redford, Faye Dunnaway, Cliff Robertson, and Max von Sydow.  If you like political thrillers, this is a great one to watch. Here’s a brief plot summary:

Joe Turner (Robert Redford), code name Condor, works as a reader for Section 17 (fronting as the American Literacy Historical Society) of the CIA. The job of the section’s staff is to read everything that is published to see if the material is being used or planted by national security agencies for the US or enemy regimes in actual operations. The office for the section, which is comprised of eight people in total, is located in a secure, nondescript building in New York City. After returning to the office from a lunch food run (for which he used an unofficial and presumably unknown entrance/exit), Condor finds that all six of his colleagues at work that day have been executed, their bodies strewn throughout the office; the seventh has been murdered in his home. After a botched attempt to bring him in, and not knowing any of his superiors outside the section, Condor begins to distrust the organization itself. He decides to go on the run to try to figure out what is happening. In his quest, he kidnaps a young woman (Faye Dunnaway) who, despite being scared by what is happening, eventually believes Condor’s story and decides to help him.

Film critic Roger Ebert wrote, “’3 Days of the Condor’ is a well-made thriller, tense and involving, and the scary thing, in these months after Watergate, is that it’s all too believable.” All the music for the film was composed by Dave Grusin, American composer, arranger, producer, jazz pianist, and band leader.
