Evening Wheel

Written for Sadje’s What Do You See

A ring of colored light stands watch
above the darkening bay,
where boats lie still in silvered rows
and dusk has had its way.
The last red ember of the sun
bleeds low behind the frame,
as if the wheel itself had caught
the sky and called it by its name.

Its spokes are strung with amber beads,
with white and turquoise thread,
a slow wheel turning toward the night,
unhurried, overhead.
No riders now, no laughing crowd,
just circuits softly hum ….
a lantern built of steel and glass
waiting for someone to come.

Beyond it, smaller lights keep watch,
scattered, dim, and small,
the murmur of a distant pier,
a gate, a lit-up stall.
They flicker like a second thought
against the harbor’s hush,
small stars that couldn’t wait for dark
to make their silent rush.

The water holds it all in trust,
a mirror bent and slow,
doubling every ring of light
in ripples down below.
Between the sky’s last breath of rose
and boats asleep in black,
the wheel keeps turning, calm and bright ….
steadfastly looking back.
