Ode On An Ice Cream Churn

Written for Monday Poetry Prompt: How do I love thee?
Our host, Bartholomew, asks us to write a poem

in response to Elizabeth Barrett-Browning’s famous quote.
Here’s where the prompt took me.

How do I love thee? Let me count the scoops.
I love thee to the depth of my freezer drawer,
Where you hide behind the peas in frozen groups,
That pint I swore I’d save …. but then ate more.

I love thee with the passion of midnight raids,
When discipline dissolves like your smoothest cream,
I love thee through my “just one bite” charades,
That turn to empty cartons …. oh, the shame!

I love thee with a spoon I do not wash,
Straight from the container, lid askew.
I love thee more than salads (that’s a squash!),
My coffee-flavored vice, so rich, so true.
I love thee best when Netflix shows grow dim ….
Just you, and me, and that distinctive rim.
