Written for Missy’s Mad Challenge #087.
The prompt is to write about something fragile
that refuses to break. Here’s where the prompt took me.

She builds it every night between the same
two posts …. though every morning finds it torn
by wind, or wing, or someone’s passing frame
who never knew they left her work forlorn.
By dusk she’s at it, thread by patient thread ….
not rage, not grief, just silk and what she knows:
the web will break. She yet builds her web.
Anchored to nothing permanent, it grows.
Come morning, there it is …. improbable,
backlit, beaded, trembling, almost not there.
Too delicate for this world, someone would say.
And yet. And yet. And yet it holds the air.

Beautiful.
When I would head out to the gym very early, the rising sun would catch all the new webs across the path to the driveway at our former home. It was amazing. As soon as I passed, they were gone of course, but returned in pretty much the same spot the next day. Little miracles.

Penelope she spins
lace making trophies she wins.
Intricate beauty spills from her
as she weaves peace for all.
Sadly she never learned, no one will care
Her creations are made to fall 💜💜💜💜
