For this week’s Thursday Inspiration, Jim Adams asks us to respond to the challenge by using the prompt word ‘dreamer’, referring to the song “Oh Sherrie” by Steve Perry or another one of his songs, any song that is about trying to hold on to a relationship or about a relationship that didn’t pass the test of time, or anything else you think fits.
If I had to make a wager, I would say most of the songs ever written have something to do with relationships, breakups, making up, and/or love in general. My response to Jim’s challenge today is a musical one … a song about someone desperately trying to hold onto a relationship … specifically, a guy begging for his girl not to leave. You can hear the desperate urgency and hopelessness in his voice. If you have never been in this state of despondency, listen to this song and you’ll know how it feels.
This is “Oh Darling” by The Beatles
LYRICS
Oh darling, please believe me
I’ll never do you no harm
Believe me when I tell you
I’ll never do you no harm
Oh darling, if you leave me
I’ll never make it alone
Believe me when I beg you
Don’t ever leave me alone
When you told me you didn’t need me anymore
Well, you know I nearly broke down and cried
When you told me you didn’t need me anymore
Well, you know I nearly fell down and died
Oh darling, if you leave me
I’ll never make it alone
Believe me when I tell you
I’ll never do you no harm
Believe me, darlin’
When you told me, woo, you didn’t need me anymore
Well, you know I nearly broke down and cried
When you told me you didn’t need me anymore
Well, you know I nearly fell down and died
Oh darling, please believe me
I’ll never let you down
Oh, believe me, darlin’
Believe me when I tell you
I’ll never do you no harm

Great choice, Nancy and Paul sings this with real anguish in his voice. I read that some people feel the song Oh Darling was about Paul asking John Lennon to stay in the band as their relationship fractured in 1969, with lyrics like “If you leave me, I’ll never make it alone” reflecting their partnership’s strain.

Thanks, Jim. I’m not much of a Paul fan, but I do like this song. Whether that story is true or not, I don’t know, but I can’t imagine Paul believing he wouldn’t make it on his own. Humility was not one of his stronger points.

Excellent song choice for the prompt. It is a wonder song writers have anything to write about after the age of like 35?

Don’t say that to Mick or Keith! 😂

I laughed at the very end of the video when John references that Yoko’s divorce was just finalized meaning now they could get married. So many loves!

Thank you, Kymber. To me, music is the most beautiful art form and the greatest way to communicate; it is sung poetry.
