Written for dVerse Poets where we are encouraged to compose an
Etheree based on trees …. Christmas or fir-themed … consisting
of 10 lines. In an Etheree, the first line has one syllable;
the second line has two syllables, and so on, until there are
ten syllables in the tenth line. We are asked to create our Etheree
in the shape of a tree, with two extra lines of 2 syllables
each forming the trunk of our tree. This is my Etheree.

Was
it just
a nightmare?
What’s happening?
I should be sleeping,
dreaming of the springtime.
It’s too soon to feel this warm;
my limbs are heavy and drooping.
I never wanted to be chopped down.
I’ve been shoved in a corner by myself.
I’m scared
to death.

From the tree’s perspective;
who are we to say trees don’t have feelings?
Thanks very much, Sara. 🎄

Thank you, KK. This was a fun prompt! The most challenging aspect was typing my words into the shape of a Christmas tree while still keeping to the required syllable count! 🎄

Yes, that made it really different and spectacular. You’re great, Nancy

A different perspective to bring home the point. I have always used a fake tree. And the live trees are not chopped, just placed with lights.

Thanks, Grace. I’m all for fake trees! We bought the best one a couple of years ago; when this one stops working, I’m going to get another one just like it! 😊

Oh my! I’m sorry. I never thought of myself as a ‘tree hugger’; still don’t. But there’s something about the wanton brutality of it all that bothers me. I realize many trees come from ‘Christmas tree farms’; some places even claim they’ll plant 2 trees for every one that’s cut down. That’s great! I just can’t get beyond the possibility that trees have feelings. If trees can ‘communicate’ with each other underground via their roots, then who are we to whack them down, bring them home and watch them die a slow death?
Thanks, Lesley. I’ll get off my soapbox now.

Nancy, you’ve channeled the tree very well. Imagine the tree would feel all of these things. Its poor feet vacated by abduction, leaving confused family members.

‘Twould appear to be the theme with this one. We are all chopping them down! Nicely done. I am no longer guilty of using live trees…

Good! It’s been years since we had a live tree.

😀 But I ain’t gonna lie. I miss the scent. It’s just not the same.

Evergreen air fresheners … just like the ones hanging from our parent’s rearviews! 😂
In all honesty, when we were doing the live tree thing, only a couple of them had that fabulous scent. Most of them were pretty blah. 😕

Blech! No way, man! I do, however, have some nice candles that evoke that scent.
It’s true, the scent lasts what… a day?

Right? Those things are awful. Gag!

So gross. Nothing worse than when you get into a taxi or uber and they have a fresh one!

Yes, an interesting challenge, Phil. The most difficult part was creating the shape of the tree.
Appreciate your comments. Thanks, Phil.

Good to know, Willow! I understand why people like the idea of having a real tree but it’s not for me. We need to save trees, not cut them down! We’ve gone that route; never again. I’m proud of my fake tree, too! 💛🎄💛

I now have a fake tree one with lights fitted. Victoria has a real one in the lounge at her side of our house.
Two of our real trees from yesteryears are now planted in the garden.

That’s the way to go if people want a real tree: buy one with the rootball attached, then plant it after Christmas. They can even be planted in large pots. Thanks Sue!
