Etheree, Poem

Christmas Tree Soliloquy

Written for dVerse Poets where we are encouraged to compose an
Etheree based on trees …. Christmas or fir-themed … consisting

of 10 lines. In an Etheree, the first line has one syllable;
the second line has two syllables, and so on, until there are
ten syllables in the tenth line. We are asked to create our Etheree
in the shape of a tree, with two extra lines of 2 syllables
each forming the trunk of our tree. This is my Etheree.

Was
it just
a nightmare?
What’s happening?
I should be sleeping,
dreaming of the springtime.
It’s too soon to feel this warm;
my limbs are heavy and drooping.
I never wanted to be chopped down.
I’ve been shoved in a corner by myself.
I’m scared
to death.

    1. Oh my! I’m sorry. I never thought of myself as a ‘tree hugger’; still don’t. But there’s something about the wanton brutality of it all that bothers me. I realize many trees come from ‘Christmas tree farms’; some places even claim they’ll plant 2 trees for every one that’s cut down. That’s great! I just can’t get beyond the possibility that trees have feelings. If trees can ‘communicate’ with each other underground via their roots, then who are we to whack them down, bring them home and watch them die a slow death?

      Thanks, Lesley. I’ll get off my soapbox now.

      1. I now have a fake tree one with lights fitted. Victoria has a real one in the lounge at her side of our house.
        Two of our real trees from yesteryears are now planted in the garden.
