Written for dVerse Open Link Night.
Our host, Grace, shares the poem “Wildly
Constant” by Canadian poet, essayist
and Nobel Prize winner, Anne Carson.

Our challenge is to write a new poem inspired by Anne Carson’s or share a favorite poem written by us. My poem is a combination of the themes “wildly constant” and “listen to the wind”.

The wind has never once arrived.
It is always already here, already leaving,
rummaging through the oaks and maples.
Tonight I lay my ear against the dark
and hear it change its mind a thousand times:
north, then nowhere, then a sudden long low vowel
but never changes its mind about returning.
Teach me that, I tell it. How to be this restless
and still remember my promise be present.
