Come Together: A Senryu

Written for Tanka Tuesday. Our host, Colleen,
reminds us that today is mid-term election day
and asks us to write a senryu … that wonderful
poetic form dealing with human foibles and
personal events, flavored with a touch of irony.
The topic is ours to choose.

they carry our hopes
lifting nations with their words
shields against the storm

yet pride blinds their eyes
chasing ghosts of legacy
fearing their own fall

just flesh, blood and bone
wrapped in robes of majesty
fragile as a leaf
