SS Baychimo: Arctic Ghost Ship

Inspired by Max’s blog, ‘Old Steam Ships’ –
SS Baychimo: The Arctic’s Ghost Ship. Here
is a synopsis followed by a poem and ballad.

Launched in Sweden in 1914 under a German flag, the steamer that became the SS Baychimo was handed to Britain after the World War I and put to work by the Hudson’s Bay Company, trading furs along the frozen coasts of the Canadian Arctic. In October 1931, homeward bound and heavy with pelts, she was trapped by ice off Barrow, Alaska. Her crew built a shelter ashore to wait out the winter, but after a fierce blizzard in late November they woke to find the ship gone. Presumed sunk, she was abandoned and written off …. yet the Baychimo would not die. For nearly four decades, hunters, traders and sailors reported seeing her drifting crewless through the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. Some even boarded her, only to be driven off by storms and closing ice. The last reported sighting came in 1969, when Inuit hunters glimpsed her locked in the ice, 38 years after she was lost. No one knows where she finally came to rest. Perhaps she sleeps on the seafloor. Perhaps she is still out there, sailing north with no one at the helm.

“Nobody At the Wheel“ – lyrics by me, music by Suno

Hmm, hmm… nobody at the wheel

She was born where the Swedish rivers bend,
Flew a flag that the war would rend,
Then they gave her a Hudson’s name,
Sent her north for the fur and the trade

Thirty-one and the autumn turned,
Every channel froze, every lantern burned,
Off of Barrow the white jaws closed,
And the crew walked out on the snow

They built a shack on the shore,
Prayed for the spring,
But the blizzard came howling
Like a living thing

Oh, Baychimo, where did you go?
Slipped from the ice in the November snow,
Thirty-eight winters, still under sail,
Holding the cold like a ghost holds a tale,
Drifting the dark where the north winds feel…
Nobody, nobody at the wheel

Hunters saw her through the morning haze,
Tilting gray in the Chukchi waves,
Men climbed aboard with their hearts in their throats,
Then the storm drove them back to their boats

Furs in the hold and the logbook still,
Cabin doors swinging with the Arctic chill,
Every time she was found she was gone,
Like a dream that you lose at dawn

They called her a wreck,
Wrote her off as lost,
But some ships don’t sink,
They just carry the frost

Oh, Baychimo, where did you go?
Slipped from the ice in the November snow,
Thirty-eight winters, still under sail,
Holding the cold like a ghost holds a tale,
Drifting the dark where the north winds feel…
Nobody, nobody at the wheel

Sixty-nine, the last eyes saw,
A shadow frozen in the floe,
Then the white swallowed her whole,
And the sea won’t let us know

Oh, Baychimo, where do you go?
Under the ice or the northern glow?
Maybe you’re resting, maybe you sail,
Still chasing home on a frozen trail,
And if you see her, just let her be…
Nobody, nobody at the wheel

Nobody at the wheel…
Hmm… nobody at the wheel

  1. This is superb! Great lyrics telling the story of the mystery, and Suno has done a brilliant job putting them to music 👍

  2. That told her story well. I really liked the thought of her going around the Arctic providing shelter for those who needed it. But…just don’t try to sail or take her! I can’t believe she was spotted in 1969… around 40 years on her own…I have to wonder where she is now. Thank you Nancy, that was wonderful!
