Sir Owen, aged seven, declared the lake an enemy kingdom and charged.

His grandfather stayed on the driftwood, guarding the treasury: one plastic sword, one dented helmet, one phone he’d sworn not to touch.

The waves retreated. Owen shouted victory. The waves returned, and Owen retreated, shrieking, the not-quite-bravest boy in the realm.

Thirty years ago, on this same shore, another boy had fought the same war. His father had watched from this same log, and never once looked away.

The phone buzzed. Golf buddies, probably.

The old man turned it face-down against the stones and kept watching his knight.
