Grinning, All Aglow: A Haibun

Written for dVerse Poets Haibun Monday:
Hunter’s Moon/Halloween. Our host, Frank,
challenges us to write a haibun that alludes
to either the Hunter’s Moon or Halloween.

The lane out past the Miller’s farm has been lit since dusk, a jack-o’-lantern every ten feet, as if someone was expecting company. I head out in my old bedsheet with the eyeholes cut a little crooked, a witch’s hat borrowed from my niece, the dog trotting beside me in a collar of paper marigolds. The corn is nothing but stubble now, low and rattling. Down by the river the fog lies in the low places like something that can’t bring itself to leave. Behind me, the farmhouse windows are glowing yellow squares; ahead, the moon has climbed over the far ridge, swollen and orange, so close I could swear it’s grinning at me. Something pale drifts across the stars …. clouds, I tell the dog …. just clouds. In the field, the dead branches reach up from the stalks like hands, and I don’t look at them too long.

big hunter’s moon ….
even the sheet-ghost walking
casts a shadow
