It Don’t Come Easy: Broken Couplet

Written for dVerse Poets –Poetry Form:
‘Breaking Up the Couple(t)’. Our host,
Grace, asks us to write a poem with
a broken, split or hinged couplet.

I kept your hoodie and your password to Netflix;
that’s how grief goes sometimes.

We split the books, the friends, the IKEA night stands;
like us, they couldn’t bear the weight.

I practiced saying “I’m totally fine” in the bathroom mirror;
the mirror didn’t buy it.

I deleted all your photos at 3 a.m., then retrieved them by dawn;
I offer no excuses.

Someday I’ll thank you for the closet space and the quiet.
Not quite yet, though.
