Silent Watchman: Ovi Poem

Written for Sadje’s weekly query:
 What Do You See?

White as winter’s softest snow,
Guarding woods where shadows grow,
Silent watchman eyes aglow,
Resting on a fallen tree.

Spreading wings to meet the night,
Drifting in a ghostly flight,
Vanishing from human sight,
Searching for a midnight prey.

Hark, a sudden, lonely cry,
Echoing across the sky,
As the starry hours go by,
Deep within the frosty air.

Claws that grip the icy bark,
Fierce protector in the dark,
Leaving not a single mark,
Fading when the sun awakes.

Nancy’s Notes:  An ovi is a traditional Indian poetic form consisting of four lines, where the first three lines rhyme and the fourth line remains unrhymed, offering a concluding thought.

This is “Owl Song” by Cosmo Sheldrake

  1. The imagery of a silent watchman fading as the sun awakes is so evocative, and pairing it with Cosmo Sheldrake’s track makes it so atmospheric! Loved your reply to lois about the ‘Owl Ovi Ode’ tongue twister—and seeing ivor20 share a companion bluesy soundtrack in the comments was such a fun exchange. Lovely write, Nancy!
