The diner had that familiar smell associated with good times and younger days. In the corner stood the machine …. chrome-edged, humming faintly, its glass belly full of records waiting to be chosen. Old Jack pressed his forehead against the glass, looking for that special number, then slid a dime into the slot the way he had every Friday since 1962.

He didn’t hurry. There was no need for that here. The world outside moved at its own frantic pace, but inside, time slowed to something gentler, something you could hold.

The needle dropped. A soft crackle, then music …. the kind that made your chest tremble a little, half memory, half ache. He closed his eyes and let it carry him back to a dance floor that no longer existed, to a girl in a blue dress who used to laugh at his jokes.

The waitress watched quietly from behind the counter, careful not to let Old Jack detect too much sentiment in her voice when she finally asked if he wanted his usual. He nodded. Some things stayed firm even as everything else changed …. the coffee, the booth, the song.

Outside, traffic made its noise, indifferent and endless. But in here, none of it could hurt him. The jukebox just kept playing, patient as an old friend, filling the quiet with something that felt, for two-and-a-half minutes, like coming home.
