Deep in the heart of the forest, beneath a canopy where golden sunlight came filtering through the leaves, three best friends gathered in their secret hideaway. Pamela, Chloe, and Lily were only ten years old, but their minds lived in a boundless fantasy of the distant future. Sitting upon a soft green cushion of mosses that filled the cracks of a fallen log, they spent every afternoon talking about the day they would all grow up and get married.

Pamela held up a bird’s feather, mesmerized by its delicate plumes, and declared it would be the most beautiful decoration on her wedding hat. Chloe traced the fuzzy tufts of a fern, deciding her velvet train would be just as soft. Lily pulled out scraps of lace and satin fabric she had saved from her grandmother’s sewing basket, delighting in how the silvery threads caught the sun.

“My dress is going to have a giant ruffle at the bottom,” Lily whispered, her eyes wide with excitement. “And it will flow behind me like a gentle stream when I walk down the aisle.”

“Mine will have a hidden layer of glittering sequins underneath,” Chloe added, spinning around as if the ceremony were happening right then.

They laughed away the rest of the afternoon, the sound echoing softly through the trees.
