Uncle Augie raised his champagne glass and beamed at the bride. “To Felicity and her new husband…. may your marriage bring endless joy!”

The bride and groom looked bemused. “Uncle Augie, I’m Felicia. Felicity’s the caterer.”

Augie, now terribly confused, squinted at the buffet table, then back at the bride. “Well,” he said, undeterred, “to the happy couple, and to our caterer, whoever you are, for the delectable shrimp!”

Everyone toasted the shrimp. Felicity, smiling, did a curtsy.

  1. A wonderfully clever and genuinely funny piece!
I love how the confusion builds so naturally, and that final toast to the shrimp is absolutely delightful. The little curtsy from Felicity makes the ending even more charming.

  2. A delightful story, my friend … and we had a genuinely glorious wedding, but I cannot remember everything, and wedding toast has faded from my memory … but I remember our wedding waltz song …

    1. Sweetly said, my dear friend. 🥰 Was this your wedding song? I don’t recall every detail either but I do remember my brother-in-law’s toast: “May your life together be like a loaf of Italian bread …. long and full of dough!” 😂 And we danced to “Something” by the Beatles. Thank you, dear Ivor, for sharing beautiful memories and wonderful music. 🥰🎶👰🏻‍♀️🤵🏻💙😍

  3. Nancy, there’s Uncle Augie. The confusion happens he gets the name wrong, mixed up the whole moment. But then something beautiful happens. He doesn’t panic. He just keeps going. “To the happy couple and to our caterer, whoever you are, for the delectable shrimp!”

And Felicity gives him a curtsy. That’s grace. That’s understanding that sometimes the mess is the memory. That’s knowing how to let someone stay human in front of everyone.

    Love this. 💙

    1. Beautifully stated! I believe it’s vital for us, especially as we age, to maintain our sense of humor and laugh at ourselves when situations like this arise …. not as a cover-up, but to remember we are only human and these things happen. Besides, the two names are extremely similar (which was intentional on my part); anyone could make the same mistake. Uncle Augie brushed off his little faux pas and kept on trucking! Thanks so much; I’m happy to know you enjoyed this little story. 🥰
