Distant Melodies

Written for Sunday Whirl Wordle.
Here are Brenda’s prompt words:

keys ~ drumming ~ rare ~ morning ~ lazy ~ humming
odd ~ whispers ~ open ~ chain ~ urge ~ ghosts

His morning coffee, forgotten, sits and cools
while sunlight skims on keys untouched for years ….
that old upright, its bench worn smooth, still humming
faintly with the weight of vanished cheers.

He hears the rare applause through open doors,
the whispers of a crowd he can’t quite name,
his fingers drumming rhythms on his knees,
an urge to play still rattling like a chain.

The odd thing is, he doesn’t miss the stage lights ….
just the hush before the first note plays ….
now ghosts of songs drift through his quiet room,
and that’s enough on these lazy summer days.
