The mouse squeaked.

The cat attacked.

The dog howled.

The baby screamed.

Parents became enraged.

Fear took hold.

Mother clutched baby.

Madness erupted.

The chase began.

Man vs dog vs cat.

The mouse was entertained.

The small gray mouse squeaked noisily behind the wall, rousing the sleepy but always curious cat who could not resist the temptation. Slowing rising to her feet, the cat feigned indifference by stretching and yawning dramatically. Then, eyeing the hole suspiciously, she crept up to the wall and began scratching and reaching her paw inside in an attempt to catch the mouse. The scratchy, squeaky noises from the cat and mouse interaction annoyed the dog who was having a good nap by the fireplace. Irritated, he barked loudly at the cat and began chasing her around the room; the racket startled the baby who was playing in the corner, and the running dog nearly knocked him over. The baby started to cry, which alerted the parents who were in the kitchen cleaning up after dinner. When they saw the dog chasing the cat around the room and the hole in the wall made by the mouse, they became angry, and the mother was frightened for the baby’s safety. Chaos broke out; the mother ran to the baby and embraced him protectively in her arms. The father took over the chase, in hot pursuit of the dog who dashed after the cat. And through all the mayhem, the little gray mouse laughed behind the wall.

Nancy’s Notes: Parataxis places clauses side by side, without subordination. It creates urgency, fragmentation, and a cinematic “quick-cut” feel. Hypotaxis uses subordination to show relationships between clauses. It creates flow, hierarchy, and cause-and-effect clarity. Reena asks us to write two versions of the same scene, using parataxis and hypotaxis.
