The Final Flame: A Couplet

Written for Day 13 of Sammi’s “13 Days of
Samhain”
words “mortally” and “morbid”.

Image by Me & Nano Banana

thirteen candles flicker, weeping blood-red wax
the shadow-veil is severed by a silver axe
a silhouette is brewing in the heavy, freezing air
a circle cast in malice, pulling roots from old despair

she rises from the smoke with a fanged and ancient grin
to let the wild, chaotic feast of hunger now begin

the iron doors are rattling as the skeletal trees bow
the time for human hiding is a fragile memory now

a morbid mass of whispers fills the dark, collapsing room
as claws of shadows stretch to pull the living to their doom
you stand before the altar, paralyzed by binding twine
a frozen, silent witness to the end of your design

she lifts a rusted dagger as the final hour chimes
to execute a vengeance born of long-forgotten times
the veil is torn completely, and you realize too late
you are mortally entangled in the witch’s chosen fate

the final flame is smothered in a cold, consuming breath
as thirteen days of waiting close the trap of endless death
