The Order

Our gracious host, Rochelle, is asking us to get
creative in 100 words or less using the photo
seen below. This is Friday Fictioneers.

The stump had been dying for years before anyone noticed. Then one spring, the tails arrived….hundreds of them, banded gray and cream, fanning out in tight rows like a crowd gathered for a verdict. They found every crack the rot had opened and filled it, layer over layer, until the whole trunk wore their pattern like a coat.

That’s how grief works. Or love. Or any of the quiet catastrophes of life that hollow us out first. Something has to die a little before the rows of small, patient things can take hold and grow. It’s life’s natural order.

  1. Death fuels life through a continuous biological cycle of recycling, renewal, and transformation. Nutrients from decaying matter feed new organisms, maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. Nice story, Nancy.

    1. Dear Rochelle

I’m so pleased to know that! I’ve seen this growth pattern before and marvel how life will always find a way to take root and flourish even when it seems impossible. Just another reminder of the wonder of nature. Thanks so much for a lovely comment.

      Shalom

  2. Nancy, stories like this are why I come back to Friday Fictioneers. You took a simple photo prompt and transformed it into something that speaks to the universal human experience of loss and recovery. The profundity packed into 100 words is remarkable. That’s true storytelling.
