In My Life, In My Heart

Written for dVerse Poetics: The Great Lover.
Our host, Kim, invites us to write a poem
based on the things we love as inspired
by Rupert Brooke’s “The Great Lover”.

These I have loved:
the low hum of a needle dropping onto vinyl, and
The Beatles’ voices mending whatever the day had broken;
the green, sweet breath of grass newly-cut at evening;
warm bread still holding the shape of my two hands;
Montauk mornings, salt-light dancing on the water;
my grandchildren’s unannounced, laughing arrival,
their shoes kicked off anywhere they land;
the crowded, golden noise of Thanksgiving dinner;
the hush and candlelight of midnight mass,
carols rising like breath into the dark;
my husband’s quiet gift of coffee when I wake up;
our cat, mottled silver in a stripe of sun,
stretching slowly out of sleep and into it again;
sheets pulled fresh and cool across the bed,
smelling of wind and nothing else but clean;
driving the open road, no reason, only motion;
the plants I tend that reward me with new growth;
and this house, its ordinary rooms,
that hold me safe, and call it simply home.
