Alice sat on the bench outside the town post office, a cardboard box balanced on her knees, and tried to steady the anxiety rumbling in her chest. Inside the box was everything she’d taken without asking …. her sister’s letters, read and re-read until the creases softened; a tea set from their mother’s kitchen cabinet; a key to a house she had sold out from under her family, half a year after she swore wouldn’t.

Alice had rehearsed the message a dozen times. I’m sorry. I sold it after promising to give you more time. I was wrong. But rehearsing never made the words sound right when she imagined saying them out loud.

A dog went running past, its feet barely touching the ground, and for a moment Alice envied it …. that pure, uncomplicated momentum. No box to carry. No theft to account for.

She thought about standing up and walking home, box and all, pretending she’d never come this far. But she’d done that before …. turned around at the last bench, the last streetlight, the last chance to make it right. Not again. Not today.

So she crossed the street, climbed the stairs, and knocked.

When her sister opened the door, Alice’s rehearsed words disappeared entirely. Instead she just stood there …. half-empty of courage but full of the truth …. and finally held out the box instead of offering another excuse.

“You sold Mom’s house,” her sister said. Not a question …. a fact.

“I did. And I need to tell you why.”

  1. I loved the “Mad” version of ‘Our House’ … I have a story about ‘our’ house being sold by my stepson not long after Carole had passed … maybe one day … my friend… 🥰🌏🏡
