The maiden Gwendolyn was tired of court life, tired of curtsies, tired of being told to smile at lords she despised. So when she found a strange black mirror buried beneath the roots of the old oak, she didn’t run to tell the king. She kept it, hiding it along with her diary behind a loose stone in a wall in her room.

The glass woke when she touched it, glowing with runes she didn’t recognize. A voice, small and tinny, seemed to call to her from within. Nobody had ever seen such a thing in the whole of the kingdom …. not the wizards, not the traveling merchants, not even the old woman who read bones by the river.

Gwendolyn named it “phone”, for reasons she couldn’t explain; the word simply appeared in her mind, whole and certain, as if it had always belonged there.

At first she used it only to look at pictures of places that didn’t exist yet …. cities of glass and light. But the vindictive castle steward grew suspicious of the glow beneath her cloak, and when he discovered her murmuring to it in the stables, he gave her a fierce reprimand, calling it witchcraft, threatening to have her named a heretic.

Afraid, she did the only thing she could think to do: she tried to delete its very existence, smashing it against the stable’s stone floor. But the glass only cracked to a new level, glowing brighter than before. Two words pulsed at its center:

PRESS NOW

Gwendolyn held her breath and pressed.
