The prairie stretched flat and gold under a bright afternoon sun, heat shimmering off dry grass that hadn’t seen rain in weeks. Dev Waldren crouched low behind a burned-out fence post, counting his breaths, feeling the hot wind push ash across his boots from the grain silo that had gone up in flames an hour before.

They’d come at dawn …. six riders out of the dark, looking for the herd his brother had died defending. Now his brother was dead, buried under a mound of fieldstone, and Dev was alone with a rifle and a debt to pay.

He heard the horse before he saw it. A shot cracked across the open land, kicking dirt an inch from his foot. He didn’t flinch. Three years in this country taught a man that fear got you killed faster than any bullet.

“Come out, Waldren,” a voice called. “Ain’t no god gonna save you out here.”

Maybe not, but Dev had something better than prayer …. he had patience. He waited until the rider crested the low rise, silhouette black against the burning sky, and then he stood and fired.

The man dropped into the ground without a sound.

The others scattered, and Dev let them go. He wasn’t fighting for glory. He was fighting for the resurgence of something he couldn’t name …. a stubborn refusal to let the prairie swallow what his family had built.

He walked home through the ash-gray dusk, rifle over his shoulder, boots dragging through grass gone silver in the fading light. Tomorrow he’d rebuild. Tonight, he’d earned the fight, and he’d survived it.
