Written for dVerse Poetics: A Tale of
Two Images. Mich has provided us with
some lovely images and asks us to write
a poem incorporating juxtaposition.
A leaf cradles the rain in trembling spheres,
each drop a tear-shaped orb so small ….
the velvet cool of a surface that adheres,
begs you to be slow, lean in, recall.

But somewhere a log gives up its years
in the only direction heat knows: higher ….
hungry amber, the light passes beyond fears,
with a warmth that tugs at your shoulder.

One surface holds the shape of the rain.
One surface chars to ash and bone.
A hand reaching out to touch a vein ….
the wetness of the leaf, the fire’s stone.

Well expressed.
The contrast is rightly shared.
The drops on the leaf versus the flames of the log.
One cool, the other hot

Nance, this is captivating it’s like a meditation on impermanence – how nature can be incredibly fragile and comforting in one moment, and fiercely destructive the next great writing 🙌

Thank you, Ange! There were many wonderful images to choose from; as a water child, the rain spoke to me and the fire soon followed! I appreciate your lovely comments. ☺️
