That Special Something

Written for dVerse Poetics: Something Borrowed,
Something Blue hosted by Dora who invites us to
write a poem using lines from the Victorian rhyme
seen below. This is where the prompt took me,
back to my wedding day ~ June 10, 1972.

Something old, something new,
Something borrowed, something blue,
And a sixpence in her shoe.”

Fifty-four lovely years ago
our song began to play,
and something in the way you moved
told me what words couldn’t say ….
not passion only,
not the breathless new,
a very special something waiting,
something that I already knew.

It wasn’t just the falling ….
any heart can fall.
It was the quiet underneath it,
the recognition in the hall,
the sense that I had always been
walking toward this room,
toward the glowing candlelight,
toward you, my handsome groom.

And now the song plays softer,
the years have learned our names,
have mapped the roads between us,
our losses and our gains ….
yet still that something lingers,
unchanged, unhurried, true,
a current running deeper
than anything we knew.

Not borrowed now, not new ….
just ours, worn smooth as a river stone,
the truest thing I ever knew
loving you and loved by you alone.

  1. The opening line of the Beatles song, “Something in the way she moves” was borrowed from a 1968 song of the same name by James Taylor. George Harrison loved Taylor’s line so much that he used it as the starting point for his own melody.

As a bride almost 38 years ago, I know exactly what you mean by this. I felt it too. This something. What a beautiful love song, Nancy, powerfully real, where the words point to something beyond the shallow, the “quiet underneath” of abiding certainty. That third stanza, like the whole poem, moves with the deep “current” of that love. To me it signifies the One who brought you two together, that held you both in the current of His love through the years, polishing your love, as you write, “worn smooth as a river stone.” Brilliant imagery, tender love story. Gorgeous writing. ❤️

    1. Dora, I am both humbled and honored by your beautiful comments. I’m sure the Almighty has been watching over us all these years. We have been blessed from the beginning with our serendipitous first meeting on a blind date. I am so pleased to know you were moved by my poem. Thank you once again for your lovely comments and for giving us this beautiful prompt. ❤️

      1. You are so welcome, Nancy. I’m sure you already know what a talented writer you are but I’m happy to keep reminding you! But more than that is the gift of faith and I love every glimpse of it in what I read. A blind date, was it? Yeah, Someone was watching alright! 🥰

        1. The blind date was originally supposed to be between me and my husband’s identical twin brother who, at the last minute, decided not to go (without letting me know). My husband took his place …. not to fool me but because it was the right thing to do and he is a decent human being. I couldn’t have been happier with the outcome! Thank you once again, Dora ❤️

    1. He truly is! Every time I go to one of my doctors, she always asks how my writing is going and that’s because my husband has talked about me so much! He really is the best. Thank you for your very good wishes and lovely comments. I appreciate them. 😌

  3. Nance this is stunning and the line ‘any heart can fall’ is a brilliant reality check that elevates the piece – falling in love is easy, but staying in it is the real magic – ❤️

    1. Oh, Ange! You are so right on! I’ve had younger people ask me what the secret to a long, happy marriage is, and I always tell them it’s vital to respect each other, keep communicating, and maintain a sense of humor. Nothing is a given in life and anything worth having is worth the effort. Thank you for your gracious and generous comments. I appreciate you. ❤️
