Written for Sunday Whirl Wordle. Our host is
Brenda Warren; her words for this week are
shown below. Here’s where they took me.
kindle ~ risk ~ dig ~ until ~ differing ~ chill
spin ~ waning ~ ghost ~ softly ~ alone ~ know

The ghost had returned to dig through the floorboards where she’d hidden the letters. He’d risk anything to find them, to know what she’d written in those final months. The differing versions of their last conversation haunted him more than his own death ever could.
He moved softly through the rooms, afraid of disturbing the silence. Each object told a story: the kindle on the nightstand, her bookmark frozen at page 247. The photograph of them at the coast, where the waning light had caught her smile just right.
The chill that followed him everywhere …. not the cold of the grave, but the cold of absence …. settled deeper as he searched. Until, at last, beneath the floorboard near the window, his fingers found them. The envelopes were yellowed, the ink faded.
He couldn’t read them. His spectral hands passed through the paper like smoke.
He’d risked everything for this moment. He could spin himself in circles of grief and longing, but the truth would remain just out of reach. The letters would stay buried with their secrets. Some knowledge, he realized, was meant to stay unknown.
He sat by the window and waited for dawn
as he had every night since she’d found him gone.

A whimsical piece with an ending I wasn’t entirely expecting!
I had to pop across to YouTube to hear the track – and I’m pleased I did!

I enjoyed the ending, not being able to read the letters. Video not available here. I found it though. The Shangri-Las had some great songs

A great story with just enough mystery to pique the interest. …Great song …the video is not available here in the UK.. but there’s no need as the title was enough to have an earworm attack 💜💜💜
