Written for Thursday Doors Writing Challenge 2026.
This week I am writing a story inspired Robbie Cheadle’s
photo of the Kit Kat Club located on Northumberland Ave.
in London. Imagine yourself in 1940s Berlin looking for
a night out and a way to forget the war for one night.
Here’s where the image took me. Won’t you join me?

The doors don’t announce themselves. No velvet rope, no bouncer with a clipboard and a god complex. Just those dark panels of wood, brass fittings catching the afternoon light, and a single arrow pointing left …. as if the entrance itself is a secret it’s only half-willing to share.
Kit Kat Club. The name sits above the threshold like a promise or a warning, depending on who’s reading it.
Inside, they say, Berlin lives again. Not the Berlin of now …. the other one. The one that knew the world was ending and chose to dance anyway. Where the lights are low and the music knows your name and the MC watches you from the shadows with eyes that have seen too much and forgiven everything.
You came on a Thursday. You wore the good coat. You told yourself it was just a show.
But the arrow is still pointing. The doors are waiting. And somewhere behind them, the band is tuning up in a language older than words …. the language of come in, sit down, forget yourself for a while.
The city hums on Northumberland Avenue, indifferent.
You reach for the handle.

Thanks so much, Jo. When I see these doors that are obviously well-known places, it’s fun to do a little research, find out their history and where they are located, and bring them to life. It’s amazing what we can find on the Internet to help bring it all together smoothly. I’m so glad you enjoyed my story and this wonderful movie clip. Thanks again. 😌

To dance when you know the world — your world — is ending. It isn’t just a place; it’s a state of mind, and I like the way you ended with the invitation to enter into that. Unknown if the reader accepts.

Thank you for such a lovely comment, Maureen. It is definitely a mindset; isn’t that why we go to the theater, read books, or just daydream? I’m definitely a fan of the open-ended story and I’m happy to see you appreciated this particular one. 😌

Brilliant story Nance – my hand is on that handle waiting to open it – and classic song choice you couldn’t have picked a more appropriate one🙌

Thank you, my friend! As soon as I saw the sign for Cabaret outside the Kit Kat Club, I knew what my story would be about. I’m so glad you enjoyed this one. 😊 ✨

Very nicely done, Nancy. I can easily imagine wanting a night out, a night to pretend to be normal under those circumstances.
