Written for RDP, where segoil asks us
to get creative with the word “quintessential”.
Thanks, Heather! Here’s where the prompt took me.

In my opinion, Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd is the quintessential album for any serious rock music fan. It perfectly balances experimental studio production, philosophical lyricism, and massive radio staples like “Money” and “Time,” making it an album meant to be experienced front-to-back. Released in March, 1973, it was conceived as a concept album that would focus on the pressures faced by the band during their arduous lifestyle, and also deal with the mental health problems of former band member Syd Barrett, who had departed the group in 1968. The Dark Side of the Moon became one of the best-selling albums of all time. Although it held the #1 spot in the US for only a week, it remained on the Billboard 200 albums chart for 736 nonconsecutive weeks, from March 17, 1973 to July 16, 1988.

They’re all fabulous, but if I had to choose my two favorite, I’d say Great Gig and Us & Them. Thanks, Mangus. Nice to see you stopping by.

This has to be one one of the greatest albums of all time. I recently saw their stage version on TV, recorded back in the 70’s. It still seemed as current as ever!

It definitely is, dear Keith. Are you talking about the Pulse videos? They are awesome! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

It’s a phenomenal album. I’ve got the two posters that came with the album but I seem to have lost the two stickers!

We have the posters, too, and I recently gave them to our teenage grandchildren. It’s an incredible album. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Glyn.

The very definition of a classic album. This came out during my second term at uni and I bought it during the Easter holiday, from the proceeds of my holiday job working on the night shift in a factory making packet meals. Some memories just stick with you!

Fabulous story, Clive! We played this one to bits It certainly wasn’t our first album purchase, but it was the best. We bought one last year for our teenage granddaughter for Christmas.

It was a miserable three weeks but it paid well!
I hope your granddaughter likes it. Will it be ‘Wish You Were Here’ next?

She loves it. Not sure about this Christmas but I want to introduce her to other great groups …. maybe the Stones. She already has Sgt. Pepper!

Sounds like a plan. Maybe a Peter Gabriel compilation? Or the White Album? Led Zep 2 or 4?

My brother Floyd Jr. would have agreed. Not sure about my dad, Floyd Sr., though.
