Bridge At Dusk

They found her glove on the third post from the end …. pale kid leather, still damp.

Lieutenant Russo walked the bridge slowly, counting. The green railings reflected in the black water below like prison bars. Somewhere in the reeds, something shifted.

She had walked this path every Tuesday. The couple in the distance had seen her. Then, between one breath and the next, she was simply gone.

No splash. No scream.

Russo crouched, studying the moss on the stone deck. A single disturbance …. a heel print, turned sideways, as if she hadn’t fallen.

As if she’d been folded into the water.

He gripped the cold railing and looked down.

Something looked back.
