Written for RDP, where leapingtoes asks us
to get creative with the word ‘reset’.
Thanks, Toes! Here’s my take.

I had an older brother I never met; he died at age 2 on New Year’s Eve, 1943. It was something from which my parents never recovered and our new year’s celebrations were subdued. We would sip ginger ale in champagne glasses while listening to Guy Lombardo’s orchestra playing “Auld Lang Syne”. Even as a child I wished my parents could push the reset button of their lives and be happy; as I grew older I realized it doesn’t quite work that way. “Auld Lange Syne” has always been close to my heart. Even after I had moved out of my parent’s house and happily celebrated New Year’s Eve with my new husband, I never forgot those quiet nights at home and the brother I never met.

Yes, it is- when my mom passed away at the age of 26, my grandmother could never bear to talk about her. I feel that was my loss too as I never knew what sort of person she was.

That is so sad for both you and your grandmother. I don’t think I realized how young your mother was when she died. It’s incredibly difficult for a young girl to lose her mother and my heart goes out to you. Your mother would be very proud of you. ❤️

I’m not surprised your parents were never the same after the loss of their little boy, I don’t know how any parents can get over the death of their child. Xx

The thought of a reset button is very appealing. Such a terrible loss for your parents Nancy. Parents don’t expect to outlive their kids, and to lose one so young is heartbreaking.

True, Di. From all the things my parents told me, they were so in love with their little boy.

Oh, so sad by dear love! It’s is always difficult when a death hangs on a holiday. My sister died on Halloween, and it will never be the same for me.
Love the beautiful song.

A lovely version of Auld Lang Syne, but I still prefer the one I played 😉
