Detective Burnside studied the crime scene. Lady Ashford lay motionless, teacup beside her.

“Poison?” asked the constable.

The detective lifted a silver teaspoon from the saucer and sniffed it. “Cyanide. But look, she was left-handed.”

He turned to the butler. “You prepared her tea, Higgins. You stirred it. She never touched this spoon.”

The butler’s face drained of color.

“You murdered her! Constable Crowther, the butler did it!.”
