RDP Thursday: kindred

Today at RDP, we are asked to share a
story, poem, photo, painting, essay, etc.,
focusing on the word ‘kindred
. Here’s my take.

The Waitress

Joanne stepped off the bus, dilapidated cardboard suitcase in hand; she looked frazzled, uncomfortable and extremely pregnant. Her white summer dress clung to her swollen belly.

Noticing the nearby coffee shop, Joanne walked in and collapsed into the nearest booth; she patted her tummy, begging her overactive baby to “give it a rest”.

Waitress Shelly Morrison appeared with a tall icy glass of lemonade and an infant strapped to her chest.

“Looks like you could really use this.” Shelly smiled as she placed the drink on the table. “It’s on the house.”

Joanne looked up at Shelly and her baby, exhausted but relieved.  She was grateful to find a kindred spirit.
