Hand Jive: The Saga Continues

MY MEDICAL UPDATE

This morning I met with my hand doctor who was quite surprised that the cortisone shots in the lump in my hand did nothing. I told him I was unhappy as it’s now become very difficult to flex my wrist or extend my fingers without the inside of my hand feeling like it’s being strangled. It’s like wearing a pair of jeans with a very tight waistband and trying to bend over to put on your shoes. It hurts! The pressure on the gut area is tremendous, just like the pressure on my wrist while flexing and bending my hand.

Next step: an MRI. I had an ultrasound back in June when I first injured the tendon but that was before the lump showed up. After the images are in, I will discuss them with a rheumatologist who (hopefully!) will tell me what the heck is going on! I was surprised to be referred to a rheumatologist; I have osteoarthritis …. not rheumatoid arthritis …. but the hand doctor said patients are often referred to a rheumatologist for unexplained or persistent joint pain, swelling, inflammation, or stiffness, especially when other conditions appear …. such as a lump!

The MRI is scheduled for Monday, September 22; I have an appointment with the rheumatologist for October 8. The saga continues.

    1. It’s really in such an awkward spot, Michele, and interferes with so many every-day activities we don’t think about. Besides that, it hurts! Whatever it takes, I’ll do it to finally get to the bottom of this! Thanks for your good wishes, cara. Most appreciated. 🥰

  1. It’s too bad you have to wait another whole week just for the MRI and then almost two more weeks after that before you can see the rheumatologist. But at least you have appointments on the calendar and that is a good thing. Feel better, soon, Nancy.

    1. Yeah, I’ve just about had it with this wrist! A little instant gratification would be nice.
October will be here soon enough. From what I understand, the rheumatologist is very busy and I was lucky to get an appointment in less than a month. And that’s all I’m gonna say about that!
Thanks for your good wishes, Fan.

  3. I hope the MRI reveals what the problem is, Nancy. This song says that Way-out Willie made his name just by doing a dance with his hands and that he can also do the Suzie Q.  It also mentions a doctor and a lawyer and an Indian chief and ‘Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief’ was a popular song published in 1945, with music by Hoagy Carmichael and lyrics by Paul Francis Webster.  The title and lyrics are a play on the popular counting game “Tinker, Tailor.”  Betty Hutton sang this in the 1945 film “Stork Club” and it peaked at #1 on the Billboard magazine charts.  ‘Willie and the Hand Jive’ has been covered by many different acts including Eric Clapton, George Thorogood & The Destroyers, Kim Carnes, The Tremeloes, Cliff Richard, the New Riders of the Purple Sage and the Grateful Dead among others.
