Our gracious host, Rochelle, encourages us
to be creative by writing a story in 100 words
or less using the photo prompt below. This is
Friday Fictioneers. Here’s where the photo took me.

Danny Cameron never knew his father; he disappeared without a trace the night he was born. Now, kneeling at his mother’s grave, Danny wished he could have just one hour with his father.
Looking up, Danny caught sight of a man watching him from across the cemetery. He was shaken; even from a distance he could see the uncanny resemblance between them. Danny instinctively knew this stranger was his father.
The man turned and walked away. This could be Danny’s only chance. He sprinted across the cemetery but the man had disappeared, taking with him the answers Danny desperately needed.

So well written, my friend. His father turning away should be answer enough. There are those who don’t deserve another’s love so hopefully, Danny can put that desire to rest beside his mother.

I just posted about drowning. I’d love to see what you have to say. ♡

Now thtat the beau is gone, I shall play a little catch-up – not too far. Of course, we are about to start our stupid season at work which will send me behind again but hey… Imma do the best I can. And I will go check tout de suite!

I think if he searches hard enough, he will find the answers within him. Good read.

Or at least quiet his mind. Nice comment, Dahlia.

Heartrending to learn why he disappeared. I’m glad his father came back to answer him. Sorrowful story, Nancy.

A harsh message but I have to agree, Dawn. Now he knows.

I think his father has already given him the answer he needed. He’ll be better off without him.

Excellent take, Gaby, and the closest to my way of thinking when I wrote this story. A significant portion of missing person reports in the US are classified as ‘voluntary departures‘. You have to wonder what’s going on in someone’s head to willingly leave everything and everyone behind and disappear without a trace.

I think most of them need help, but they must want it.

Life’s unanswered questions often remain a mystery until the end. Sometimes I wonder if we are better off not knowing some things. The story has a dreamy feel to it. Wonderfully written!

Thanks for your wonderful comments, Brenda. I agree; we are always searching for closure when some questions are unanswerable. Often, when chasing answers, we are left with more questions. Quiet acceptance can be a comfort.
Thank you!

Oh, that’s a punch in the gut. Ugh. Great share, including the moving song that I’ve never heard. Definitely saving that one. Appreciate you, Ms. DJ Writer Extraordinaire! A beautiful weekend to you. 🌅

Gracious comments, as always, Michele. ☺️ Perhaps he’s a ghost; perhaps he’s one of thousands of people who go MIA and pop back onto the scene to check on those left behind. Perhaps Danny looked up too soon and wasn’t meant to see the mysterious stranger. Maybe it was all a dream! Whatever the answer, it’s reader’s choice. So glad to know you enjoyed Beluga Lagoon; our dear Aussie friend Ivor turned me onto them. They are an intriguing group, for sure. 🎶 Happy weekend in the Valley! 🌞

Is Danny’s father a ghost? Intriguing tale, Nancy, and I enjoyed the song choice as well.

He’s either a ghost or is checking in on the son he never knew. There definitely are people who go MIA and pop in when it suits them, always careful not to be seen.
Beluga Lagoon is a Scottish group, relatively new to me; I’m enjoying their unique sound. Thanks Debbie.

Grief and regret conjure an apparition of hope, that disappears and deepens his disappointment. A ghost story that will haunt him from now on.
