July In Cheyenne

This week at Glyn Wilton’s Mixed Music Bag,
he’s asking us to write about a song in which
the title or a line mentions the current month.
Here’s my featured July artist and his song.

Lane Frost was an American professional rodeo cowboy who specialized in bull riding and competed in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). At only 23, he was the 1987 PRCA World Champion bull rider.

On July 30, 1989, at Cheyenne Frontier Days in Cheyenne, Wyoming, after completing a successful 85-point ride on a Brahma bull named Takin’ Care of Business, Frost dismounted and landed in the mud. The bull then turned, knocked Frost over, pressed his right horn on Frost’s back, and pushed him against the muddy arena floor. Frost initially rose to his feet, took a couple of steps, waved for help, and then fell to the ground; he died on the arena floor from massive internal injuries. He was 25 years old. When Takin’ Care of Business pushed Frost against the mud, the bull’s entire body weight was at the end of his horn, breaking some of Frost’s ribs and severing a main artery.

After Lane Frost’s death, Cody Lambert, one of his friends created the protective vest that professional cowboys now wear when riding bulls.  Later, in 1996, the Professional Bull Riders made protective vests mandatory, and subsequently all bull riding organizations did as well.

American country music singer and songwriter Aaron Watson has been recording and releasing records since 1999 but it wasn’t until 2002 and his third album that he finally gained radio airplay and attention nationwide. His next album to be released was The Honky Tonk Kid, featuring Willie Nelson on guest vocals. In 2013, he released the album Real Good Time featuring the track, “July in Cheyenne” as a tribute to bull rider Lane Frost, specifically for Lane Frost’s mother. Watson wrote the song after being inspired by conversations with Lane’s mother and her reflections on his life and faith.

LYRICS

In the rain and the mud in July in Cheyenne
They had to carry away that brave young man
A little part of every heart of every rodeo fan
Died there in the rain and the mud in July in Cheyenne

Lookin’ back it doesn’t seem so long ago
He was bigger than life, God rest his soul
Why he died that day is hard to understand
Right there in the rain and the mud in July in Cheyenne

So tip your hat to the cowboy every once in a while
And take time to remember that cowboy’s smile
A little part of every heart of every rodeo fan
Died there in the rain and the mud in July in Cheyenne

No buckles on a shelf collecting dust
Still his memory shines inside of all of us
Some miss their hero, some miss their friend
His mom and daddy long to see their little boy again

So tip your hat to the cowboy every once in a while
And take time to remember that cowboy’s smile
A little part of every heart of every rodeo fan
Died there in the rain and the mud in July in Cheyenne

In the rain and the mud in July in Cheyenne
They had to carry away that brave young man
If your washed in the blood someday you’ll see him again
And it won’t be in the rain and the mud in July in Cheyenne

  1. I cried at your story of the tragic death of this young man. The song is beautiful and the video clips of Lane Frost they played in the background were awesome. Thank goodness the bull riders wear protective vests now. Such a tragedy.

          1. It is.
I ever tell you how my kids did NOT want to swim with the dolphins in Cuba because they are disgusted that they are kept in captivity – it’s in the ocean but they are limited… I was so damn proud of them!

              1. Yes. Exactly. I’s why I love Cirque du Soleil so much. Not a single animal. I don’t go to zoos either, except one we have just off the island which is basically a sactuary for any animals that were hurt in the wilds of the Greater St,Lawrence Seaway and cannot be returned after rehabilitation. It’s a fabulous way to see what animals live in our area.

  2. As everyone’s saying Nancy,…so young again, …makes you weep,…I’m listening to the music, in tribute, …it’s gorgeous, country and western music is a breed apart, , something just ‘thrills’ when I hear it,…💙

  3. What a sad story about Lane and the freak accident that took his life. I am not a fan of country music, but knowing the story of Lane Frost, I enjoyed Aaron Watson’s song. Thanks for sharing it.
