Last night we watched another B&W oldie .… The Shop Around the Corner from 1940. Here’s what the critics had to say. We agree.
Critics Consensus: Deftly directed by Ernst Lubitsch from a smart, funny script by Samson Raphaelson, The Shop Around the Corner is a romantic comedy in the finest sense of the term.
Alfred Kralik (James Stewart) and Klara Novak (Margaret Sullavan) are employees at Matuschek and Company, a general store in Budapest. Klara and Alfred are constantly at odds with each other, butting heads and disagreeing on almost everything. Both are enamored of their respective pen pals, who serve as welcome distractions in their lives. Little do they know, they are each the other’s pen pal and, despite outward differences, have unwittingly fallen in love through their letters. Oh, in case you think Mr. Matuschek looks familiar, he’s Frank Morgan who played the wizard in The Wizard of Oz.
I’ll save you a seat. Enjoy the movie! 🎥 🍿 🥤

I watched the Holdovers last night and I enjoyed it. It was kind of sad and I didn’t like the ending, but I thought it was a very intelligent movie.

It’s unfortunate that all movies can’t end the way we want them to, isn’t it? That’s life and I do agree with you about the end but honestly, in good conscience, I don’t think he had any other choice. I’m glad you enjoyed it, Jim.

I recognized Carrie Preston who is now Elsbeth Tascioni on the Prime show Elsbeth, and it seemed like she was playing the same character in this movie.

Yes, that was Carrie Preston but I’m not familiar with Elsbeth.

It is in season 2 now and she is an ex-lawyer that helps the NYC police to solve crimes, mostly murder.

I’ve seen that movie a few times. James Stewart does a fine turn as does Frank Morgan. Good acting and writing, something we don’t have much of today.

You can’t do much better than Jimmy Stewart in 1940. These are the original romcoms …. only better.
Thanks, Phil
