They spotted each other in line for the bus.
It was a beautiful day for a ride through the city; a double decker was something new for them. The idea was appealing and romantic.
But now the excitement of the ride was eclipsed by the thrill of a rendezvous. They shared the same thought: once in the bus they would find each other.
The bus was crowded, difficult to see the other passengers. He moved up while she came down; they crossed paths unnoticed.
People got on and off and at the end it was just them, alone at last.

Ha! That’s Hong Kong. I know that intersection. The sign on the bus reads “Fu Lu brings blessing to the new year again and again”. It’s a taxi stand outside Pacific Place.

I loved living there, and felt oddly connected to it.

I didn’t know you lived there. Do you speak the language?

We lived there many years. I can read the characters more easily than speaking Cantonese because it’s a tonal language and getting the tone or nuisance even slightly wrong results in a different word entirely.

That’s pretty impressive, Misky!
My grandkids study Mandarin in school. I was amazed how quickly they picked it up.

Good morning! Cantonese doesn’t have a simplified form, whereas Mandarin has a simple and standard form. Most people in China speak the simplified form of Mandarin, plus their own dialects.

I wonder how often two strangers spotting each other share the same thought. Not trying to be a curmudgeon. Just wondering.

Not a curmudgeon at all, A. I think it’s a romantic thought and hope the answer is “often”.
