Yes, indeed, my lovelies! Just in time for another Unicorn Challenge!

Oh Mommy! Oh Mommy! Come quickly! Come quick!
Something has happened to poor Mr. Chick.
Oh, what is amiss? Can my best friend be sick?
He’s scrawny and thin as a tall candlestick!
Oh Mommy! Oh Mommy! His neck is all hunched
and his beak is a-gape, as if searching for lunch.
Perhaps I should give him something to munch
and something to drink. A tasty fruit punch!
Oh Mommy! Oh Mommy! His feathers are gone!
His wings are a-hanging and bare to the bone.
Whatever it is it’s so terribly wrong!
I’ll help him feel better by singing a song!
Oh Mommy! Oh Mommy! Come look at his seat!
It’s shrunken right up and so have his feet!
I think I should give him something to eat
to revive and cheer him and make him go “tweet”.
Now come here, my child, and sit by my side.
Hear all Mommy’s words and do not try to hide.
There will be no more playing or hitching a ride
for your dear Mr. Chick, oh most sadly, has died.
Come now, my dear child. Be brave and don’t cry;
I am going to tell you what happened and why.
Remember the Monday when the sun left the sky?
The rains came a-heavy and Chick could not fly.
Dear child, be happy and hear what I say:
Chick has transformed to spread joy every day!
Now people are flocking from miles away
to see our grand statue standing proud on display!

Great take on the image prompt, very engaging and upbeat.
….and as a poem!
Loved the ‘repeating figure’* in the first verses. It creates that sense of personalness/immediacy/urgency in the opening.
Nice
* probably has a way-cool Greco-Roman term in the textbooks

Every once in a while I’ll see something that screams at me to write a poem. This was one of those times.

Nancy isn’t near as scrawny
Her pearly skin not deeply tawny
Perhaps yer eyes be fading quick
Wee birdie’s name be Mr. Chick!
Thank ye, Blue Eyes!

Please don’t think this is mere requital
but if I’m wrong or if I’m right I’ll
point out a detail fairly vital
Mr Chick’s not a name it’s just a title!
Now this is becoming quite absurd
how do you determine the gender of a rusty bird?
(Please, oh please, don’t make the obvious comment!)

Nature happens, but I find it very upsetting to find dead birds. You have reframed this experience for me with this beautiful write. Thank you.

Thanks, Michele. I’m easily upset by any dead animals in our yards. Yes, it’s nature but it was a living, breathing creature with a heart and soul (regardless of what some may think) capable of feeling love and pain. I rarely do poetry; this photo prompt just called out for a poem and this is what I came up with in about an hour. It was fun to do. Thanks for sharing your thoughts today.

This is a beautiful bit of cheer!
Transformation isn’t always pretty, but it tells a great story if handled right. Mother love!

Thanks, Liz. There’s been a lot of stories going around lately on WP about rain and birds; have you noticed? After my sad little story about finding a dead bird, I needed to brighten things up a bit. I do very little poetry but this just called out to me for a poem. Thanks for sharing your thoughts today.

What a lovely conversation and emotional poem that can be enjoyed both by children and adults! Perfect rhyming makes it rhythmic too. Well penned, Nancy!

What a delightful children’s poem, Nancy. The child’s questions and desire to make things better. And the mother’s explanation that better is sometimes different. What a great take on the prompt picture.

A wonderful story/poem. The care of a mother for the concerns/sorrows of a child. That is what I read! Children are so observant and full of “whys”.

The little ones certainly are curious, that’s true!
Thanks so much, Sighs! Your take was spot on. I don’t write many poems so when I do I try to make it count! I’ll be reading this to my little Colette.

Thanks, luv! I gave poetry a shot.
If it stinks, I’ll likely be taken out and shot!
Perhaps I need to drink a shot 🥃 ❣️
